Srebrenica:

I am Abdurahman Malkić, the major of Srebrenica.

I call everyone from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad to come to Srebrenicu and see what Srebrenica went through and survived in these times, to make a centre of democracy in Srebrenica and an example of how regaining trust in Bosnia can raise, Mr Malkić said in his video letter.

After the opening of the Youth centre and filming of his video letter, Mr Malkić made a statement for the journalist of the Videoletters web site:

- I recorded this video letter as one of the steps in the, still fragile, process of reconciliation, in the hope that people will follow my example, as an individual who was exposed to all sorts of pressures and crimes committed over people of Srebrenica. I can say that I felt all the stupidities that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the past years on my own skin.

Mr Malkić didn’t want to talk about all the things he went through:

- That is a different story, he said, and continued:
- This project is certainly a good thing, because it contributes to the difficult, but necessary process of establishing trust. Because I am a person who wants improvement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially in Srebrenica, and the condition for this is connecting and renewing contacts, which is difficult between sides that were deeply in conflict. We cannot live in the past. We cannot and must not forget, but we have to look ahead. Trust is, at this moment, more important that reconciliation.
