Tomorrow night Raccoon presents a selection of episodes from the powerful documentary series Videoletters. Filmmakers Katarina Rejger and Eric van den Broek travelled the former Yugoslavia for five years to make the 20 episodes of the series finished so far. The aim is to foster reconciliation througout the region by focusing on individuals and their stories. Each episode features the stories of friends and relatives, each of a different nationality, who were separated in one way or another by the war of the early 1990s. First, the two individuals or families tell their sides of the story, filming videoletters the filmmakers then shuttle to the other side. In many cases, the two sides have not spoken in years. The episodes usually end with a meeting that often is highly emotional and cathartic for all involved. The series has been broadcast on public televisoin stations throughout the former Yugoslavia, and was featured earlier this summer at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival at Lincoln Center (see the review from the New York Times here). Raccoon is located at 43-32 22nd Street, Suite (buzzer) 301 in Long Island City, between 43th and 44th Avenue. Several episodes of the series will be shown, starting at 6:00 p.m. |
